Complete JL Audio Sound System
By Chris Henry

The rest of the system is in place. We have premium speaker installed in the front and lots of cleaner power. The JL Audio Stealthbox has been around for a while for a wide variety of applications. In fact a few years ago I installed one in my 1998 Grand Cherokee, click here to read that review. I liked the stealthbox in my ZJ so I figured I would try out the new and improved Stealthbox for the WJ. The Stealthbox installs the same way at the old one did except there is only one bolt for the WJ installation which makes it even easier. It installs on the driver's side of the rear cargo area and takes up very little useable space. Click here to see the installation manual. Installation is an easy job, drill one hole, thread a bolt in, tighten it down, and that is it.

What is so different between the ZJ and WJ Stealthbox? Well, from the outside, they look the same, it is a little heavier, but that is it. The big difference between the 1993-1998 and 1999-2002 Grand Cherokee Stealthbox is the woofer, JL has upgraded woofer used in the Stealthbox from a 10W1 125 watt 1.5" voice coil woofer to a 10W3 250 watt 2.25" voice coil woofer. The 10W3 has much greater throw, a bigger voice coil and magnet, and can handle twice the amount of power.

Now if you took time to read my review of the ZJ Stealthbox you know my feelings. I loved it and it provided years of awesome sound. You can imagine, the new one exceeds the old by far. I didn't think it could be improved that much but it was. Well, the WJ designs takes up a little bit more space and it does weigh more but who cares, this thing rocks.

I tweaked the crossovers and turned up the system. The bass was magnificent. The 250/1 JL amp supplied the sub with plenty of juice and the sealed enclosure holding the 10W3 pounded out bass notes with tightness and authority. The bass output from the new WJ Stealthbox is probably 50 percent more than the ZJ Stealthbox. The ZJ Stealthbox was awesome and this is simply incredible. Tight, controlled bass that takes care of the low end and can handle anything you throw at it. Under normal loud listening conditions, with typical music, and flat equalizer settings you the sub barely breaks a sweat. Turn up the bass high (which I personally don't like, I like to hear all the frequencies) and pop in some Jay-Z and the sub will make the rear view and side mirrors vibrate intensely.

There you have it. The complete JL Audio system. If you hop in the WJ, everything looks stock. With the cargo compartment cover extended no one can see all of the goodies and there is still plenty of cargo space. Although top quality audio components are heavy, they add less than 100 pounds to the total weight. The system goes well perfectly and sounds incredible. It clearly proves the biggest flaw in the stock setup in the amplification and the speakers, not the headunit.
