How to change the Fuel Filter on a 5.2 liter Grand Cherokee

According to the factory service manual, maintenance schedule B, the fuel filter should be replaced at 60,000 miles. Of course it should also be replaced if you suspect fuel contamination. This job is straightforward but messy with hazardous material involved. Tools required are a 10 mm. socket, needle-nose pliers, maybe a small flat screwdriver, plenty of rags, a spill container and safety goggles. You can go to Mopar for an OEM part or to an auto parts store for a like replacement such as this Fram part number G-7399.

The primary caution is that the fuel injection system maintains pressure even when the vehicle is off. The manual details a dangerous and complicated procedure to known as Fuel System Pressure Release Procedure to relieve line pressure in order to limit fuel spray when removing the filter. Or you can let the vehicle sit for two weeks while you're away on travel. I choose the latter. If you can let it sit for a day or two before beginning the job, that might help.

A good precaution is to wrap the fuel line connector to the filter with a rag as you pull the line off. Remember too that a fuel filter, like an oil filter, can hold nearly a cup of the volatile fluid, so have a catch container ready. After you pull the first line off, drain as much fuel into the container as possible. You can't get it all from just one side of the filter, so you will have to drain it again after pulling the second line. At 52,000 miles, the backwash from my filter was pretty dirty.

Procedure

  • Remove the retaining clamp bolt with the 10mm socket.
  • Pinch the line connector tabs with the needle-nose pliers and remove the line.
  • Drain that side of the filter.
  • Repeat for the other side.
  • Carefully slip the retaining clips off the old filter. You may need a small flat screwdriver for this.
  • Install the clips on the new filter.
  • Install the fuel lines on the new filter - the side marked OUT is towards the engine.
  • Replace the clamp and tighten the bolt.
  • Please dispose of the collected fuel and filter in an environmentally safe manner.

You will probably have to crank the engine longer than normal the first time after the change. Check for leaks and you are done.
