Product Review

Ever wish you had more space in your Wrangler? Sure you did. Been thinking about some type of external rack system but were cautious about raising the center of gravity on those off camber rock crawls? You better have.

Now you can have more space and still maintain a low center of gravity with an internal rack from Kilby Enterprises.

Kilby Enterprises offers internal racks for Wranglers with or with out the factory storage box. You can stack your light articles such as duffel bags, tents and sleeping bags on the top area, then store the heavy items like, ice chests, tool boxes and spare parts below. Kilby racks are tig welded and black powder coated (other colors available at extra cost).

Installation is quick and easy, simple hand tools are all that’s needed except, for that hard to find "tamper proof T-50 torx" bit you will need to remove the bolts from the front legs of the roll cage. I checked a number of stores that should have had it but the only place I found one was from a Snap On dealer.

This install is completed on a 99 TJ without the rear cargo storage box. Your installation may differ.

Front leg install

Once you have the T-50 torx, remove the bolts from the legs of the roll bar, these bolts face the rear cargo area. Install the short legs, which are marked left and right, don’t tighten these just yet.

Rear leg install

Lift up the carpet that covers the wheel wells. You’ll see two rubber plugs where the factory trunk would be mounted. Remove these plugs, if you have nutserts instead of rubber plugs you will need to drill them out. If you plan on leaving the carpet in the rear, you will need to make some small holes for the 3/8" bolts to pass through. I used a small xacto knife and cut a small cross in the carpet to allow the bolt to pass through. You will need access to the wheel well area to tighten the nuts on these bolts. Below the Jeep is a black plastic liner, your hand needs to be in the area this is covering. If there is enough room to slide your hand in between the plastic liner and the tub, you’re in luck. If not then you need to remove the clip that holds the plastic liner in place. Once you have gained access to the wheel well area, install the 3/8" hardware and the rear legs, leave the hardware loose for now.

Rack installation

Once you have all four legs loosely installed, place the rack at an angle and slide it into the back of the Jeep. One person can do this but a helper would make it easier. Install the 3/8" hardware and secure the rack to the four legs, don’t over tighten you could crush the tubing.

Once all four rack bolts are secure, tighten the rear legs then the front, adjust if necessary to level the rack.

Total install time: 30 minutes or less
