Default Help She just died

Ok I have a 1996 XJ sport 4x4 automatic with a 4.0 engine. The other day I was going down I-85 at about 70 to 75 miles an hour. All of a sudden she just died. I got it off on the side of the road and started looking. There is a 30 amp mini fuse in the power distribution box under the hood that was blown. When I looked under it and the rear o2 sensor was unplugged. (The Check engine light for this sensor has been on for a while). So I walk to a store and get some fuses and when I put one in it blows as soon as I try to start it. I got it off the side of the road and brought it home, changed out the o2 sensor since it had some bad wires on it too. I noticed today that every time I put in a new fuse and just turn the switch on the fuse pops. I don't know for sure what that fuse controls since the lid to the distribution box doesn't say and the owners manual diagram is not the same. I have tried to be as detailed as I could and if you are reading this please respond with something. I know I don't have to tell anyone what it is like when one of you daily drivers goes down so thanks for the help in advance.

First of all, check the FAQ. Here is a fuse box diagram the nice folks here at JU have posted for just such an occasion.

Take a look at what your 30 AMP fuse goes to and see if there is short or loose ground.

97+ power distribution box fuses are as follows. I am not sure if they are the same as the prior years.

Power distribution center (under the hood)
Looking at the PDC from the front of the vehicle, the bottom right mini fuse is #16, the one above it is #17, the top one in the column is #18.
Fuse #19 is to the left (of #16)

Fuse #16 underhood lamp, transmission control module, radio & interior lights
Fuse #17 O2 downstream relay
fuse #18 coil rail & injectors
Fuse #19 headlamp switch & data connector
Fuse #20 combination flasher
Fuse #22 fuel pump relay
Fuse #23 brakelamp switch
Fuse #25 fog lamp relay
Fuse #26 power amplifier

Thanks to Cherokee Yellow as the OP of this info.

I did look at the fuse diagram posted in the sticky. The first two are fuse blocks under the dash and the last one it not in the order that mine are in. From what I can tell they are generic diagrams and not specific to a 96. Thanks for the help though and if the Amp of each fuse and weather it is a mini or a large fuse would help me to identify which one is which. The one that keeps blowing is a 30 amp mini it is located in the middle of the block nearest the fender between a 20 amp and a 10 amp I think. Thanks again.

This guy had the same problem in his 94. Included is a diagram of the 94 wire route and fuse chart to the power distribution center that I leeched. It helped another person with a 96 so......

OK first let me say thanks for all the help. I have changed the second o2 sensor and was still blowing a fuse. In all this trying to start the Jeep my battery was running down so I disconnected it to put another one in to keep going, I had also disconnected the front 02 sensor wondering if that was also an issue. Well I ended up having to jump it off since the other battery I had was opposite poles. When I hooked the battery back up and then got the jumper cables on and tried it she turned over and acted like it was going to fire. I checked the fuse again and it was ok. (I think all the previous attempts to start it might have flooded it some). After a few more tries she fired up and ran smooth. While it was still running I reconnected the front o2 sensor and nothing changed she kept going. I then turned it off and tried again and she started right up. She has been running now for over a week with trips to Charlotte (an hour one way) trips to Johnson City Tn (about 3 hours one way) she is running great. All I can think of is something tripped a code to the computer not to run and to blow that fuse. Then when I disconnected the battery it reset the computer and all is well. Thanks for the help. Hope this can help someone else.
