Default towed for the first time with the Hemi yesterday

I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would be a lot rougher than it was.

pulled ~7,000 lbs trailer/load (my 1 ton TJ, spare iroks, extra wheels, extra engine, extra parts, etc on an 18' trailer).

got 11 mpg on a hilly 50 mph road for 35 miles. I was impressed. handled the steep hills really well. It almost seemed to get BETTER as i drove. Either i was figuring out the shift points or it was learning.

either way, i'm really satisfied with this as a tow pig

I towed about 4,000 lbs + 3 people packed with gear on a 5 hour drive from sea level to 6300' The Hemi did a very nice job... although if you push it too much and your engine temp reaches red, you may lose your power steering.

REALLY?? i pushing the hemi causs it to overheat?

thats nuts..

I towed with my GC a 6000lbs load doing 75-80 mph and had no overheating issues..
I know my diesel is different, but the cooling systems in both trucks (hemi/diesel) is the same....

You do know the hemi uses the power steering pump and fluid to run the fan.. i bet you were low on fluid or have a leak.. that would explain the overheating and the loss of powwr steering.

Only the 4.7 and 3.7 have electric fans...

ya my guess is he had a problem with the power steering and that lead to the fan not spinning and it overheating.

i'd be pulling over if my rig got ANYWHERE near hot.

Thats awesome! the HEMI does get heat soaked pretty bad especially in the summer. I'm pretty sure mine is heat soaked right now and it hasn't been running for the past 7 hours.

/sarcasm

Did the rear sag much pulling that much weight. Did you have to use a load equalizing hitch?

We were hauling with my buddy's aluminum car hauler. we evened it out as best we could by moving the load on the trailer. It wasn't super squatted but it could defenitely use a load equalizing hitch. I'm looking for a trailer right now. The issue i'm having is i'm 86" up front and need to custom build fenders/deck etc. Once i get my own i'll use a weight distributing hitch for sure.

jeep also has E rated yoki's on it too

Mine sagged enough that i used my foglights as opposed to my normal headlights to keep from blinding oncoming drivers..

But there have been a few that installed those airlift spring helpers (air bags) and they seem to work pretty good.

I am thinking about towing my 68 charger at times to car shows. It weights about 3800 pounds plus the weight of the actual trailer.

You'll be completely fine, thats not even 3000 lbs. I wouldnt go too much over 7000 lbs with the Hemi. I reguarly tow a 5000 lb 21' boat, no problems.
